Musical Director Stephen Rumsey

Stephen Rumsey is a busy freelance conductor, chorus master teacher and coach, working principally in Essex and Suffolk, and as artistic director of the music consultancy, SyrinxMusic

As a teenager Stephen was an orchestral manager with the London Symphony Orchestra working with conductors such as Previn, Bernstein, Abbado, Horenstein and Rozhdestvensky. He went on to study at Leeds University under Alexander Goehr and Philip Wilby, later in Siena with Franco Ferrara, and also with Peter Maxwell Davies, John Carewe and Hans Keller.

Stephen Rumsey has held conducting positions at Basildon Choral, Writtle Singers, Chelmsford Opera and Basildon Youth Opera and on the conducting staff at Morley College. He is frequently asked to make guest appearances with choirs and orchestras, and writes and arranges music whenever time or commission allows.

Stephen was founding music director at Opera in the Orchard and, in addition master-minded musical events such as Essex Composers' Forum, Great Eastern Rush-hour Proms and the opening of the 'new' Liverpool Street Station by Her Majesty the Queen. Such projects led to the formation of SyrinxMusic, a consultancy concerned with the musical supervision of such projects and events as well as the development of ensembles such as Singarama, an exciting new vocal group.

In the role of chorus master Stephen Rumsey has worked, both in this country and abroad, with Basildon Symphony, City of London Sinfonia, Britten Sinfonia and Istanbul's Akbank Chamber Orchestra, with conductors such as Cem Mansur, Lionel Friend and David Arnold.

For a number of years Stephen was a council member of SPNM (Society for the Promotion of New Music), promoting the music and professional development of young composers and he has encouraged the commissioning of new work in his various positions of responsibility.

More recently Stephen Rumsey has been working with the talented up and coming rock band from Essex, 'Missing Andy', and he hopes that this relationship will develop further. He also continues to "get down with the kids" as a french horn coach to the Essex Youth Orchestras and as mentor of Brentwood School String Orchestra.
